"Faster, Pipkin, faster!" Her mother's frantic squeal propelled Pipkin forward. A shadow stretched long across the snow-dusted field – Reynard. His breath puffed white, his eyes gleaming with predatory hunger. Pipkin pumped his powerful legs, the icy air burning his lungs. He risked a glance back. Reynard gained, a blur of russet fur. Suddenly, a glint of metal. A forgotten snare! Pipkin veered sharply, Reynard, momentum betraying him, crashed into the wire. A frustrated snarl ripped from his throat as Pipkin disappeared down his burrow. Safe. For now. He huddled with his mother, the earth a fragile shield against the hunter's rage above.
